Description
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 1783 Pewter Plate For someone who knows what they are looking at, this could be a great find for them. I know nothing at all about pewter and I can’t recall when I last saw a plate like this. There is just no telling in what eating establishment or tavern it was used or who may have eaten their stew and bread from it. When you own the plate, its past is the story YOU weave… Up for sale is an authentic 18th century pewter plate that looks to have been hand-made. It has a nice surface and pleasing light medium gray patina. A beauty that should be on display with the collections of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg,Virginia and other respected museums throughout the world. This antique pewter plate that measures 12 1/4” in diameter by 5/8 inch tall and weighing about 1# 12oz carries a date of 1783 and the initials I A. On the reverse of this historic plate there are a few marks. There is an Angel in an oval with the letters HB, what looks to be a Crown (?) with the letters HB, a Shield with two halves with one half having what looks to be a Cannon and a Bow and arrow and the other half I’m guessing is a Star and a Castle(??). There is also the name of a town – La_terburg and a name that looks like it reads F_rd. M___er (?) This plate was sent to me by a friend in Germany who knows I collect such items so the town I would say is German. The front of this plate is etched with a picture of a woman carrying a tray with a mug, glass and decanter. On the tree in front of her there is a heart carved with the initials O and V. The bottom of the rim is decorated with oak leaves and acorns. (See photos) The top center of the plate on the rim carries the date 1783 and the initials I and A. There are blemishes and scratches were a knife and a fork were actually used. At the top center there is a split between the rim and the plate. (See photos) NOT a pristine piece as this looks to have been an actual piece that was used on a regular basis. Its GREAT character shows and I’m sure it has seen its share of historical and local events in its 225 year life. A great addition and conversational piece for your kitchen or den.
