Description
For your consideration is an 18th century pewter plate, measuring 9-5/8 inches in diameter by 3/4 inch tall, weighing one pound two ounces, and showing the mark of its maker on the reverse. This well preserved mid-sized antique pewter plate bears three marks of eighteenth century master pewterer "IOHAN ANSZHELMTEST" and the date "1774" impressed inside the larger hallmark with a sword- and scales-bearing angel in the middle of a cartouche on either side. The language inside the banner hallmark is "IOHAN ANSZHELMTEST, FEIN ENGLIS BLOCK, 1774". Each of the flanking angels has "I A F" over the top of their cartouche and "7 4" across the bottom. There are no owner marks or other additional marks on the plate. The condition of the plate is excellent with only minor signs of surface wear, and the patina is variable across the plate as the various metals alloyed to make the pewter begin to react to the air after a couple of centuries. This fine plate, both very valuable and very collectible, is yours for a modest opening bid. Thank you for visiting my auctions, and good luck to you in all your bidding. bdr
