This is a great Antique Watchcase Atomizer marked American Hard Rubber Co. New York Patented Aug. 1 1899 measuring approx. 3 1/8" wide x 2 1/4" . It was made to resemble a Pocketwatch and as we understand it used for sniffing liquid medicine but it has stem attatched to the lid that makes it seem possible that it was used for perfume but I could find no documented information as to it's actual use. It is made from a hard rubber also known as India Rubber or Gutta Percha Percha which was probably the earliest form of plastic invented , even earlier than celluloid as I understand it. We have other Gutta Percha items marked Goodyears Patented 1851 . Same type of material, same type of smell. The condition is very nice with some wear which is very typical . The lid unscrews and there is the stem which appears to have the tip missing, a dabber? . A great late 19th century piece.
