Designed in the Chippendale style, which became highly popular in England around the end of the 19th century, this chest of drawers displays the finest in antique design and craftsmanship, which partly accounts for the magnificent condition in which this chest remains after over a hundred years of use. A significant factor in the marvelous beauty and enduring strength of this chest of drawers is its recent restoration, hand-performed by a third-generation English cabinetmaker before being imported to our antique furniture store here in Atlanta, GA, USA. The result of this restoration is an incredibly rich mahogany complexion and grain, whose loveliness owe not only to the French polishing performed during the restoration, but also to the subtle patina that has settled into the wood over the years. The solid brass hardware also complements the mahogany quite beautifully, while hand-worked carvings down the canted corners also look quite striking. With a classic two-over-three drawer design, this chest of drawers also offers plenty of storage space. Each of these drawers features hand-cut dovetailed joints, so they are quite strong, while sturdy shaped bracket feet provide sturdy support. Of course, this chest of drawers has sustained some minor surface wear consistent with age, mainly in the form of stress marks, which can be seen in the pictures accompanying this listing; also, the original key has been lost so the locks no longer function. One of the sides has developed an age split, which is a term that describes the separation of the boards that form the frame of the chest. Age splits occur in all solid wood pieces after they have aged and do not affect structural integrity, so they are purely cosmetic. From the original craftsman to the recent restorer, this antique Chippendale style chest of drawers exhibits the finest in English cabinetmaking and would make a fine addition to any home furniture collection! The mahogany, having developed a lovely patina and being French-polished in a recent restoration, displays a rich complexion and grain. Even the sides look great! Also, if you click this picture to view it in a larger size, you can better see this age split that runs down the length of the chest; it is the dark line on the right. These solid brass swan neck pulls and escutcheons contrast beautifully with the mahogany. Here you can see closely the detail in the mahogany. The canted corners feature elegant carvings. Each drawer features hand-cut dovetailed joints. Here you can see a scratch, the bottom of the age split, and the shaped bracket feet.
