Description
Tough times call for tough measures, and it is time for this exquisite flatware canteen to start a new century of service to another admiring family. Now a full 100 years old, the set is in excellent condition showing minimal wear appropriate to age with just enough of a hint of patina that you'll be able to persuade yourself to enjoy the tactile pleasure of polishing each of the 114 warm, soft sterling pieces lightly before setting them carefully into place at your family holiday table. Each piece is fully hallmarked: anchor, star with a capital E and a lion passant, PW Ellis, sterling 1908 By PW Ellis & Co. Toronto, these pieces are a beautifully crafted, double-struck curvaceous, nouveau pattern. Sterling Silver Flatware service for 12 Massive 114pc set with NO MONOGRAM 1908 This is a massive North American sterling silver flatware service for 12 by PW Ellis & Co. of Toronto Ellis made fine sterling flatware during the first quarter of the 20th century until they were bought out by Birks. This hallmark can easily be confused with Gorham. Rare P. W. Ellis & Co. of Toronto, Canada ( 1928 taken over by Birks). Actually, Ellis was sued by Gorham over the similarity of the hallmark (Gorham lost). The set includes all the useful pieces like soup and dessert spoons, and isn't loaded with some of the less practical pieces. It includes 12 dinner knives, 12 luncheon/salad knives, 11 dinner forks, 12 luncheon/salad forks, 12 seafood forks, 12 large soup/table spoons, 12 cream soup spoons, 12 dessert/ice cream spoons, 11 teaspoons, 5 large serving spoons, 1 shell bowl sugar/ preserve spoon and 1 fish slice and 1 pie slice for a total of 114 pieces. Very distinctive double-struck design with no monograms. Pie slice is not marked. Good size for dining, the dinner knives are 9 3/8", the dinner forks 7 3/4". All knives have had their carbon steel blades replaced with stainless. The spoons and forks weigh 115 troy oz. The knives probably have another 30+ oz., for a total of approximately 150 troy ounces There is some surface scratching as you would expect from an old set, otherwise it's in great condition. No pitted blades or wear on the tines or spoon bowls. Offered here with reasonable reserve, which is quite close to the "Buy It Now" price. Why risk losing out? ******************************************************************************** The relevance of differing types of canteen (set) is the effect on both the price and the table. The greater the consistency of the canteen, in size and proportion, the more expensive it will be. A straight canteen means that all pieces are the same pattern, by the same maker, and generally of the same date. A full canteen consists of twelve place settings. The scarcity of a pattern is proportional to the price and the time it would take to build a set. Remember: if you are buying new, the value of your canteen will go down from the moment you buy it and will only begin to increase again once you have passed away An antique straight full canteen (if you are lucky enough to come across one available) will continue to appreciate in value from the moment you buy it! ******************************************************************************* TERMS: Your bid signifies that you have read and will abide by these terms. Perhaps I should attract a buyer that wants to add to their Whiting! I am in the process of shooting more pics now, recharging the camera battery actually. I will get close ups for you, and post them in the description, as any attempt I make to describe the difference with words would only be more confusing. This may be made for Ellis by someone else, that seems reasonable, and it may be another very similar pattern that can be named, but it does differ slightly but definitely from the Duke of York photos I've seen on ebay Reply: Fascinating. I see the differences!!! All the other birks/ellis gorham/whiting patterns are exact. I have never seen a 'variation' (louis XV. chantilly, lancaster rose). I knew that the serving pieces blade designs matched one of whiting patterns exactly and the pattern was so reminiscent of duke of york (without checking) but it seems to be a variation on Duke of York with the serving ends of the king edward pattern. Who knew. I learn something new every day
