Description
One of the finest tables I have seen, this gorgeous dining table has the densest, finest, heaviest striped mahogany I've seen in 25 years. The wood as well as the craftsmanship is spectacular. It measures 50" wide where most tables of the period are only 48". Each leaf weighs about 25 lbs. Three original leaves and three made later. Exuberantly animated book matched crotch veneer apron, very striking and lovely. Gothic tower pedestals, octagonal with a large cove moulded collar. Solid mahogany extended heart shaped base with cylindrical turned legs surmounted by a turned raised disc with ball finial. Original casters which are concealed within hollowed, recessed cylinder feet. Pedestal and base all veneered in a beautiful veneered crotch pattern. Base is a 4" thick solid chestnut wood, indicative of the Boston makers. An iron rod connects a wonderfully designed flared suspension medial brace attached by a recess inside frame. Bottom of apron has a 1/2" beaded moulding. The laminated apron is 2" thick all the way around and the screws have never been taken out of it. The stretcher / expansion movement is a solid, 4" wide mahogany board with a 2" sliding dovetail. This example was made by an incredible, fantastic maker, there is smooth, easy movement and can be opened and closed by one person. When fully extended the center leg supports center of stretcher to support additional leaves. Alcove within a cutout in back of pedestal. French polish over entire table and leaves. Extremely sturdy, no play, construction is magnificent, seats 6 when it is closed, 8 when two leaves are in place, or 12 comfortable when it is fully extended.
