I am not a big fan of oak, and won't even buy it unless I believe it to be an exciting or exemplary piece in some way. This bookcase does have me smitten because it's special and a glance alone, can tell you as much. Look at the quality of the finish and most importantly the sophistication of the design, canted corners, carving and unusual brass mesh grill work. The finish is much darker in person than the photos show and is much better looking because of that. This is not a country piece, this is decidely formal, but made for a person who loved the solidity and substance that only oak can offer. The bookcase has adjustable shelving and also comes completely apart for set up in any home. This piece dates to the 1880-90 era and is French.
