Description
This is a top quality all brass /bronze instrument which is in good working order but, after years of underground use, it could be descibed as cosmetically 'challenged'! The instrument has a brass case with 7 inch folding sights (wires missing), one with two small subsidiary flush folding sights. The glass has a small crack. The chapter ring and dial would have originally been silvered but no longer. The chapter ring is calibrated 0 - 90 degrees in four quadrants, the main dial is calibrated 0 - 360 degrees. The two verniers retain the original silvering and are calibrated 0 - 60. There are two good spot spirit levels. The dial is marked Alex Mabon & Sons Glasgow. The indicator has a jewelled bearing and sits on a steel spike with a circular brass bearing relief/transit lock operated by means of a screw on the pillar. The indicator consistently sets North. The pillar/mount assembly incorporates a ball & socket joint with clamp and a threaded tripod mount. Th hardwood & brass tripod is in good order. The box has obviously seen hard times and, illustrating its mining use, the original leather carrying strap has been replaced by one cut from a conveyor belt. The box & compass weigh 6 kg, the 27 inch tripod weighs 2 kg. Shipping & handling will be £13 for a two day UK delivery; overseas more. No reserve. artyess store
