Description
This is a very old pewter ladle with a finely turned wooden handle accented by a distinctive turned bone tip, the age of which is indicated by the workmanship of the pewter bowl as well as that of the wooden handle. The cherry wood handle measures 8 inches counting the tapered tenon, and the pewter bowl is 3 inches in diameter by 1-1/2 inches deep with the attached socket adding 3-1/2 inches in length by 7/8 inch diameter. The wooden handle screws very snugly into the socket with a few gentle turns for a total combined length of 14-1/2 inches. The bowl/socket is also very expertly hand made, and bears a mark of the maker in the center of the inside of the bowl, which can be seen in photos 5 and 6. The maker's mark consists of a standing lion with a "J" on the lower left and a "C" on the lower right. As can be seen from the photos the ladle and handle are very clean, undamaged, and finely finished. The pewter is apparently a hard version, since the only scratches are the inscribed initials on the front and back of the socket, X and R respectively. This is a strikingly beautiful piece and you could justify its very reasonable cost in terms of display alone, but this ladle is fully and totally functional and could easily be used for your favorite stew or your guests' favorite punch. Thanks for visiting my auctions, and good luck to you in all your bidding. bdr
