Exquisite French Sterling Silver Condiment Hors d'Oeuvre ServersSilver Very fine set of condiment or hors d'oeuvre serving pieces in the original presentation box. Condition is excellent. The pieces themselves are not monogrammed; although the box bears the initials "E.B." The handle of each piece is decorated with thistle leaf and flowers. Thistles signify nobility of birth or of character. The pierced service ends of the sugar sifter and bonbon shovel are beautifully engraved. And the solid serving end, shaped rather like a pie-server, bears a foliate engraving of graceful ferns and vines. The box is lined with blue silk and velvet, and is also in quite good condition. Each pieces bears the maker's mark for Liinzeler & Cie, the sterling standard for .950/1000 parts silver, and the box bears the mark for Jules Piault, rue de Turbigo, 68, Paris. Thie fabulous thistle pattern designed by Robert Linzeler after 1900, exceptional enough to be included in "Le couvert et la coutellerie" by David Allen. Linzeler, successor of Jules Piault, is among the most exemplary French grand master silversmiths. Saying that, I am struck yet again by how hard that is to understand by Americans. In France, there are more silversmiths in a given city during a specific time period, say 1838-1878, than there are in the entire United States throughout all history! So, for a French silversmith to be among the top tier, well, I would say it is very like each of them being on a par with Tiffany in the US. Please see photos for dimensions.
