Description
Mahogany & Brass Marine Telescope ASHMOORE & OSBORNE C1830. This superb Brass & mahogany barrelled Sea captians marine telescope , dates from the 1830s when George IV was the reining monoch of England. It is fully signed "ASHMOORE & OSBORNE DAY OR NIGHT LONDON WARRANTED" William Ashmore worked in Sheffield in 1825 then from 1830 worked with osbourne from 42 Burgess st sheffield. The telescope is a two draw , which pulls smoothly & has protective covers on the objective lens as well as the eyepiece , both with subtle detailed banding. The barrel is mahogany which has had a previous owners initials naively carved . The telescope measures 93cm fully extended & 41cm when closed & the diameter of the objective is 5cm ,the first draw tube has a couple of dints , there is a few scratches on the mahogany barrel & a small slather of brass is missing from the viewing lens which was used as a type of early spring .The lenses and screws are all original and the optics are excellent. This high quality captians telescope from the regency period should appeal to any serious collectors of telescopes or marine items.
