Lilley 1830' Description I purchased this 12 years ago in London as authentic and have, five years ago, learned that there is some doubt as to its authenticity. Since then I have looked for evaluations off Portabello Road in London and from people in the United States who I felt should know. So far the consensus is not helpful. The universal answer seems to be "I don't know". If you intend to bid on this globe I caution you to consider my experience and look for an article dealing with fakes in the Scientific Instrument Society Bulletin about five years ago. The Society is very helpful and maintains a web site. If you love collecting scientific instruments you won't regret becoming a member. It could be helpful looking at very similar globes by John Lilley at murrayhudson.com and oldmapgallery.com. This globe is two inches in diameter and stands three and- three quarters inches high. The paper label on the bottom is protected by old "varnish" and is difficult to read but the words "J. Lilley" and "East India Docks" are easy enough to see. Twenty one other characters can be made out but it is difficult to make out the entire word. Bid with caution. During the next months I will be offering for sale my forty year collection of Scientific, Medical, and Steam items as well as unusual hand tools. Collector and Technical books in these areas will also be offered. All are very good to excellent, no junk. It will be worth your while to bookmark this site.
