The first workshop to start in the very central via della Croce, just a few steps from Piazza di Spagna, the historic jewelry hit great success when Prince Torlonia offered the opportunity of moving the atelier into his palazzo, making it famous among the Roman aristocracy. The Borghese, the Colonna and the Odescalchi families appreciated the fine works of high goldsmithery, production that in 1939 was already present at the New York World’s Fair. At the same time, the atelier was a supplier to the Italian Royal family and European aristocracies. Towards the 40’s the jewelry moved to the prestigious location in piazza di Spagna, in the premises occupied in the 1800’s by the French jeweler Pierret. In December 2004 the Petochi family bowed out and the historic jewelry was acquired by a prestigious company, obviously Roman, operating in the jewel and luxury world.“We are aware that we have bought not just any business but an inestimable heritage, given the more than 130 years of experience, given by a safe full of rare stones”, says Antonella Paolinelli, general manager of the Antica Petochi gioiellieri dal 1884 company, “and the prestige of a name appreciated by those who count”. If the names of today’s clients are absolutely top secret, we managed to get her to tell us something of the past. And so we got to know that among the jewels collected by the Countess Mona Bismarck, protagonist of four billionaire marriages, noted trend setter and great animator of Capri society, there were various pieces by Petochi, and that a part was put up for auction by Sotheby’s in 1986. That same year also saw the sale of two rivières of diamonds commissioned from Petochi by Umberto II di Savoia for his future wife Maria Josè, and realized with stones that had belonged to Queen Margherita. But Antonella Paolinelli is convinced that “the great families are a feather our cap, but today there is a class clientele that does not go to the jeweler to buy thousand-and-one-nights tiaras or necklaces. That is why we are creating jewels in small series, however taking care not to devalue the brand with mass-market products. And with one eye on wearability: playing on tone-on-tone combinations, like that of the Australian with Ceylon sapphires or rubies with pink sapphire; we have designed pieces that go perfectly with the garment” .The new management, however, remains attached to a noble conception of the profession that Paolinelli interprets as a mission, in which the spreading of the culture of the jewel has an important role. A conception that is reflected in the arrangement of the boutique, on the piano nobile at no. 23 in Piazza di Spagna: it is a real gallery of old and new jewels and silver, where the client is guided toward the discovery of the masterpieces made or faithfully restored by the craft-workers of the House. Even the most innovative collections are linked to the values of the great goldsmithery tradition: “The jewel has never been understood to be like any other investment item, but above all as the vehicle of a message. We recoup its function in a modern language”. From this philosophy come the new acrostic pendants (a fashion going back to Napoleon), in which the message is given by the initial letters of the precious stones used, as recently designed for the film “Stage Beauty”. And the revisiting of some of the House’s classics, such as the jewels with ancient coins and the micro-mosaic, a technique in which Domenico Petochi is the top expert in the world. Anyone who has been to Rome knows the sampietrini, the porphyry cobbles that take their name from the original paving of St. Peter’s. Well, the city administration has decided to substitute them with asphalt (more than two million have already been torn up), stirring up a chorus of protests. But the Romans will not lose these symbols of their history. As well as the fact that the City will re-use them for pedestrian areas, Petochi 1884 has thought of saving their image and memory, realizing the Sampietrini collection. Thanks to a particular alchemy in the finishing of the golden surfaces, the precious Sampietrini manage to portray the worn appearance of the real stones with realism. It is yet another confirmation that the reorganization of Petochi 1884 is being carried through with great respect for the tradition of the House and its indissoluble link to the Eternal City.
