Description
QUEEN & COMPANY BAROMETER / ALTIMETER MADE BY: QUEEN & COMPANY, PHILADELPHIA, MADE IN ENGLAND QUEEN & COMPANY INSTRUMENT: James W. Queen & Co., as the firm became in 1859, was soon the largest and most successful purveyor of scientific apparatus in the United States. It could not, however, recover from the depression of the early 1890s. Nor could it compete with the more specialized instrument companies that were coming into being, several of which had been established by men who had learned the instrument trade by working for Queen. It was incorporated as Queen & Co. in 1896, became the Queen-Gray Company in 1912, and the Gray Instrument Company in 1926. (FROM THE SMITHSONIAN HISTORY OF AMERICAN HISTORY) THIS ITEM IS MARKED QUEEN & COMPANY MAKING IT'S MANUFACTURING DATE PRE 1912 METAL CASE WITH LOOP NO MARKINGS ON BACK OF METER SETS IN CASE WITH GREEN FELT LINING (THE CASE HAS WEAR AND THE SNAP IS BROKEN) THE METER IS IN VERY, VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT CONDITION THE FACE CRYSTAL IS NOT SCRATCHED OR CHIPPED THERE APPEARS TO BE A LITTLE LINT AND SPECKS UNDER THE GLASS (IF THE GLASS CAN BE REMOVED FOR CLEANING I CAN'T FIND HOW) MEASURES 2" ACROSS X 1/2" THICK HAS THE LOOK OF A POCKET WATCH I would like you to have a little history on this item. This came from an estate where the owner's relative is believed to have been an engineer on the building of the hydro electric dams on the Au Sable river. The Au Sable River runs about 80 miles from near Grayling to Lake Huron. Along the river’s eastward flow, Consumers Energy operates six hydroelectric dams: Mio, Alcona, Loud, Five Channels, Cooke and Foote. The hydros were built between 1911 and 1924.
